This distinctive brooch tells the story of a romance.  On January 1, 1878, Alba presented it to Kate, after having the names and date inscribed by hand on the back.  We can only speculate on the occasion.  Anniversary?  A memorable way to usher in the new year?  Gold-in-quartz became popular during the California Gold Rush, when miners would occasionally find bright veins of gold in quartz of various colors.  They used it in a variety of forms of jewelry, and it remained popular until the 1906 earthquake brought other priorities.  This 14K brooch, inlaid with two shades of quartz and accented with black enamel, measures 2 ½” in length, the perfect length to fasten a collar or scarf.  Wear a bit of history!
